Hengistbury Head Dorset Engagement Photoshoot

Just like any good plan coming together, the trick to success is all in the practice and your wedding pictures should be no different. The aim of the engagement shoot is to have fun in front of the camera and capture the je ne sais quoi of your couple connection, in preparation for your big day.

An opportunity to smooth out any of those nerves, an engagement shoot helps you to feel more relaxed and comfortable with having your photograph taken. A chance for you to get to know me and for me to understand your unique couple style. This is less of a photoshoot and more like going for a walk with a friend. Hence why we allow roughly 2 hours so that we are all feeling relaxed and not under any time pressure. The shoot will usually (weather dependent) take advantage of the few hours, before the sunsets, making the most of the soft, romantic glow of the golden hour sun.

You’ll know you’ve had a successful engagement shoot when your big day comes around and you don’t even give having your photograph taken a second thought. It will also help you understand why I’m hiding behind a tree on your wedding day, searching for the perfect light or the perfect background or bokeh.

01.

location, location, location

02.

When choosing the perfect location for your shoot, you may already have a meaningful place in mind or maybe you need my help and experience to guide you. Have a think about somewhere you feel comfortable & relaxed, or maybe you would like to involve some kind of activity or location import to your story. Have a think of the vibe and aesthetic that you would like your photos to have.

what should i wear?

It's great to co-ordinate however no need to match, think about colours that complement each other and you'll want to match the vibe e.g. formal vs casual. It's important to feel confident and comfortable in your outfit. You'll probably want to factor in a few things such as the weather & season, especially if your shoot is outdoors, equally you should wear clothing suitable to the location, colours that go with your chosen backdrop.

Tip: Some of my brides have their engagement shoot after their hair & makeup trial, which is a genius idea.

anything i shouldn't?

Big logos and large prints can often date and can distract from the two of you. It's probably a good idea to not have your phone in your pocket too. If you're really unsure on what to wear, you can never go wrong with neutrals! Or just send me a message with ideas and I am more than happy to help.

04.

relax and have fun!

It's normal to feel shy and a bit awkward at the start of your session, but you'll soon relax. Laugh it all off! Keep conversation light and upbeat, this probably isn't the time to discuss the cost of living or politics. If you're relaxed and in a good mood then it will show in your photos and you'll get more great photos!
